  • In Mr. Porter’s thirty years of experience he has been a landman, an attorney in private practice, and an in-house attorney, as well as a business owner and a participant in various exploration ventures.  He has built a reputation as an attorney who understands business and who can creatively apply business objectives to the legal needs of his clients.

Mr. Porter began his career running title, buying leases and doing curative work throughout East Texas.  He then moved in-house, handling prospect generation and lease acquisitions, deal negotiations, joint operating agreements, farmouts, due diligence, property acquisitions and divestitures in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, California, and the Rocky Mountains.  After graduation from law school, he was a commercial litigator, appearing in court almost daily, handling motions, bench trials and jury trials.  In 1990, he joined the legal department of Pennzoil Company.  His practical approach to legal issues, understanding of the business and ability to seek solutions to meet the needs of both, made him a valued and trusted advisor in both legal and business issues.  He rose to the position of Vice President – Legal and Assistant Corporate Secretary of Pennzoil subsidiary Jiffy Lube International Inc. He also served as a Vice President, Director, or Trustee of various other U.S. and foreign Pennzoil entities. He was responsible for all legal matters involving those subsidiaries, including litigation, stock and asset sales and acquisitions, real estate acquisitions and leases, franchising, distribution and PMPA, antitrust, environmental, intellectual property, advertising, product licensing and sponsorships, and media relations. Since leaving Pennzoil in 2004, Mr. Porter has been in private practice, concentrated on business acquisitions and onshore and offshore oil and gas matters, primarily in exploration and development and related issues and contracts, acquisitions, title opinions, litigation and bankruptcy, and general commercial matters.
